Conservation Grazing

a biological approach to land management

  • Our flock can easily move through your property to open up areas with dense overgrowth.

  • Our team works with grazing animals to remove invasive plants and spot treat stumps to prevent regrowth.

  • Our goal is to help you protect and restore your landscape for the long term. We combine invasive removal, reseeding natives, and timber stand improvement for a holistic mangagement plan.

What is conservation grazing?

Grazing animals remove invasive species, clear overgrowth, and prepare the land for ecological restoration. When deployed thoughtfully, grazing animals are effective tools for land management. Conservation grazing has many benefits when compared to other land management techniques:

Impact
Compared with brush hogs or forestry mowers, grazing animals avoid the carbon emissions and soil compaction that is caused by heavy machinery.

Scalability
Conservation grazing is often more cost effective than other interventions because the animals do most of the work clearing overgrowth and eating down invasives, reducing the amount of work required for paid staff members.

Precision
mobile fences allow the work to focus on the specific areas of need while avoiding any hazards or sensitive areas of the landscape.

“In grassland studies, an intermediate level of grazing often results in the highest species diversity.”

Conservation Grazing Case Study

At Sullivan nature sanctuary, our fearless ruminants cleared invasive mulberry and Japanese hops, and thickets of ragweed to make way for our crew to do timber stand improvement, cut mushroom logs, sow native seed, and plant native trees and shrubs. Check out this video produced by Deep Roots featuring the project.

More Services

  • Planning

Our holistic approach to land management prioritizes long term goals. We create detailed plans that turn the high level vision for your site into the specific tasks necessary for successful operation.

  • Implemention

For each component of a plan we can assist with installation and execution. We produce seedlings for plantings, manage contractors and 3rd parties, and source materials and equipment.

  • Engagement

Projects in our network share access to supply chains and aggregate demand for products. We perform ongoing management and offer technical support.

we support a variety of land management and agriculture based projects

  • Water Management
Water is the single most important nutrient for your farm or garden. It is absolutely essential for every plant, animal and microbe, and the way it moves across the land, soaks in, or is collected in ponds and swales, will have an enormous impact on the long-term viability of your project. We design interventions that maximize effective rainfall, reduce run-off, improve infiltration and soil water holding capacity. For landscapes with ponds or streams, we can help address erosion, livestock access, riparian restoration, and aesthetic improvements.

    Soil Improvement
Soil is the most valuable resource on our planet. Healthy, living soil is our best tool for farm profitability, and long-term resiliency in the face of climate change. We begin with soil lab tests, water infiltration tests, on-site observations, and interviews with landowners to create a plan to maximize soil health, and soil building. We use floral diversification, cover cropping, pasture cropping, no till planting plans, inoculants, composting, and animal integration to achieve peak soil performance that matches the goals for your farm or garden.

    Ecosystem Restoration
We are highly motivated to utilize native plants and trees on all of our farm projects. Native plants provide the highest quality habitat, ecosystem benefits, and resilience, because they are already adapted to your region. We create restoration plans that maximize native habitat for birds, butterflies and other wildlife. Our restoration plans focus on invasive species removal and management, timber stand improvement, native seeding, native plantings, and reforestation. Our techniques can be tailored for specific goals, such as improving hunting opportunities, habitat for specific species of concern, or various forms of ecosystem farming.

  • Livestock Management
The health and wellbeing of our animals is paramount to everything we do. Healthy animals, humans included, interacting with the landscape the way they were intended to is the best way to maximize the beauty, function and profitability of your farm ecosystem. We help farmers develop livestock management plans that maximize animal welfare and quality of life while reducing costly and often ineffective inputs. Husbandry plans include breed selection, selective breeding criteria, natural context and natural history, guardian animals, diet, and rotational grazing plans.

    Agroforestry
We are absolutely nuts over creating savanna habitat. The oak savannas of our region were one of the most productive and verdant ecosystems in the history of our planet. By mimicking this ecosystem type, we can maximize the photosynthetic and animal output of a farm, while building soil, and creating a legacy that will last for hundreds, or even thousands of years. Our agroforestry plans include planting layout and design, species selection with a focus on long term thinking, animal integration and wildlife benefits. We provide or source trees, plants and seeds, and can support installation and maintenance.

    Natural Beekeeping
There is a better way to keep bees, and we can't wait to show you. We are ardent Natural Beekeepers, and we support commercial production and backyard beekeeping that focuses on letting the bees do what they do best, and not tripping them up with a lot of costly and ineffective interventions. We offer hive installation and maintenance, training, swarm capture, and education.

    Mushroom Production
So many people are interested in growing their own mushrooms, but just don't know where to start. Home grown mushrooms can be a great addition to your diet, or a very lucrative farm business. Our mushroom production plans help growers select species, growing medium, timing, classes, and production efficiency. Whether you want to grow a few pounds for your family, or start a mycological empire, we can help you get started.

    Market Gardening
A market garden is an excellent way to feed your family the highest quality produce, or to supplement your farm income with fruit and vegetable sales. We support market gardening projects with plans that address weed management, production schedule, crop succession, input reduction, transplant production, seed sourcing and saving, sales, and soil improvement.

    Small Scale Agriculture
Our key team members met and coalesced around a large community garden in Kansas City, Missouri. We believe in the community building power of farming and gardening! We support projects like community gardens, urban farms, and homesteads with designs for water management systems like rain gardens and ponds, lawn removal, vacant lot transformation, food forest design and planting, small animal meat production, and native plantings. We can also provide insight into garden management, division of labor, attracting volunteers, and long-term thinking.

  • Program Incentives
Our methods are consistent with the standard for marketbased programs like the Audubon Society’s Conservation Ranching certification. Landowners employing regenerative methods may be eligible for grants through initiatives like the USDA’s Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education program. Some landowners pursue conservation easements to lessen their tax liability and protect their property’s future. We help landowners navigate these processes so they can benefit from public and private incentives

    Circular Economy
Every drop of carbon on your farm or in your community is valuable and useful. We see these "waste streams" as opportunities and resources for your projects. We will help you take advantage of free, local resources that turn waste into profits. Through mulching, vermi-composting, thermophilic composting, Johnson-Su Composting, In Situ composting, and mushroom production, we can help identify useful resource streams and reduce food waste, while maximizing the fertility and profitablitiy of your project.

    Education and Outreach
We love to nerd out on the topic of regenerative farming, and we love any opportunity to engage the public through on farm demonstration and tours, talks and presentations to community organization, value added product workshops and volunteer opportunities. We see these events as opportunities to develop and educate future customers, future farmers, and to reap the benefits of volunteers who want to enjoy an on-farm experience while helping new farmers get started.

    Hospitality
One quick and easy way to help make your farm more profitable is to take advantage of short term stay opportunities such as Airbnb, camping, glamping, tiny home rentals, events, and classes. Your visitors are also potential customers for your value added products and farm goods, and become ambassadors for your products, your process, and your philosophy.

    Regenerative Architecture and Green Infrastructure
One of our team members, Bob Berkebile, was crucial to the development of the LEED certification system for green infrastructure, and being more regenerative in every aspect of farm design and function is a major goal of ours. We work with contractors and partner organizations that can help restore buildings and infrastructure, and integrate green building standards and technology to reduce the farm's carbon footprint, and maximize profitability.
