Eat the Invaders
Our sheep have spent some time this month removing overgrowth and invasive species as part of a restoration project in Parkville, MO. Our fearless ruminants clear invasive honeysuckle, mulberry and Japanese hops, and thickets of ragweed to make way for our crew to do timber stand improvement, cut mushroom logs, sow native seed, and plant native trees and shrubs.
Check out this video featuring the project. Thanks to the City of Parkville Parks, Missouri Department of Conservation and Deep Roots for their excellent work on this project.
This is a great time of year to tackle this invasive shrub since most of the native vegetation has hardened off for winter, while the honeysuckle is still green making it easy to target for the next couple weeks.
Our hard working crew of sheep will take a well deserved brake during the winter. and in the meantime we are starting to book our flock for conservation grazing projects like this in the spring. If you know any land managers struggling with bush honeysuckle, Japanese hops, autumn olive or other invasive species on their property let us know so we can get their property on the flock’s calendar for next year.
